We Preach Christ Crucified

Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. (1Corinthians 1:20-25)

  • Hello John,

As we have "progressed" here in America, as far requiring higher education or more specific seminary degrees in order to qualify for leadership in the church, do you think this has done more harm than good?

If you look at the context of Pauls words you posted, it seems that he is attempting to tear down the foolishness of following certain men, including himself. In verse 10 he exhorts them to work hard at avoiding divisions among them and to agree with each other.

In a way, it looks to me like what was going on at Corinth was the beginning of theology as something to debate on in the Christian church and Paul was calling it foolishness and the wisdom of men and the world in comparison to the simplicity of Christ crucified.

  • I love this text. Man, at his best, could never establish a concept of redemption as complexly simple as the cross.

  • Christ crucified-the greatest scandal the world has ever known, yet to us, it is the power of God unto salvation.
